What height is required for residential railings (IRC)?
The International Residential Code (IRC) requires a minimum guard height of 36 inches for residential decks, balconies, and porches that are more than 30 inches above grade. Our 33.6" glass panels + spigot meet this requirement at 36" total installed height. Note: Some states (such as Massachusetts) may require 42" for all occupancies — always verify with your local building department.
What height is required for commercial railings (IBC)?
The International Building Code (IBC) requires a minimum guard height of42 inchesfor commercial occupancies, multi-family buildings, and public spaces. Our 39.6" glass panels + spigot meet this requirement at 42" total installed height.
What are the requirements for tempered glass in railings?
Glass used in railings must be safety glazing per CPSC 16 CFR 1201 and/or ANSI Z97.1.All our panels are 12mm fully tempered safety glassmeeting ASTM C1048 standards. Tempered glass is required in locations where breakage could result in falls or cutting injuries.
Are there special requirements in Florida?
Yes. Florida has thestrictest wind load requirementsin the US. High-Velocity Hurricane Zones (HVHZ) in Miami-Dade and Broward counties require Miami-Dade NOA or Florida Product Approval. Wind-borne debris regions require impact-rated glass. Design wind speeds range from 130 mph inland to 180+ mph on the SE coast and Keys. Contact us with your project address for verification.
What about pool fencing requirements?
Pool barrier requirements vary by state but generally follow the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC): minimum 48" height, no climbable features, self-closing/self-latching gates with latch releases no higher than 54" above grade. Our 48" glass panel system with self-closing gate hardware is designed to meet these requirements. Check your local code for specifics.
Do I need an engineer stamp?
Some jurisdictions require engineered drawings stamped by a licensed PE for glass railing installations, particularly for commercial applications. This is mandatory in NYC and common in Florida.
